KLUANG CHILDREN’S CAMP
The Kulai WCG congregation organized a children’s camp that was held at the Greenfields Resort in Kluang, Johor from 21 to 24 November 2008. The resort is used as a National Service camp at other times of the year. The facilities in the resort included dormitories, dining hall, meeting rooms, outdoor courts, football field, lake for canoeing, obstacle course, flying fox tower and assembly ground.
A total of 22 children, from 6 to 16 years old, came from Johor, Selangor and Sabah to attend the camp. Sixteen adults were present, serving as teachers, activity coordinators, helpers and dorm monitors. The resort staff prepared meals while National Service Camp instructors taught canoeing and flying fox activities.
Campers and adults arrived on Friday 21 November. After registration, briefing and lunch, the group drove to Kluang for a hike up Gunung Lambak. Thirteen youths and 4 adults made it to the summit of 1400 ft. That evening after dinner, campers enjoyed ice-breaker games and were taught simple survival skills.
The next day began with exercises, morning devotional and breakfast, followed by Bible class. Then the teens went for canoeing while the younger ones enjoyed the obstacle course and telematch. The afternoon was taken up by outdoor games like basketball, badminton and rounders. In the evening the teens had a communication skills class and group discussion while the preteens did sand art on cards.
Sunday began with exercises, devotional and Bible class. Then the teens went through various activities in the obstacle course designed to build confidence, coordination and teamwork. The preteens enjoyed canoeing and making sand art cards. After lunch the campers were thrilled to experience the flying fox activity. This was followed by a competition between staff and campers, in canoeing and rounders. Then everyone enjoyed a special barbecue dinner in the pavilion above the lake. The teens continued the communication class and the preteens their sand art project. After that the campers went on a night hike in the plantation around the camp.
On the last day after breakfast, the adults had a debriefing session to evaluate the camp experience. A worship service was conducted for all the camp attendees. During lunch thank-you cards made by the campers were given to the staff, and attendance awards were presented to each camper. Then it was time to break camp after an enjoyable 3 days of learning, growing, sharing and bonding. Truly it was an worthwhile experience for all.
